Safety Notice

Wild animals can carry diseases and may bite or scratch if approached.

  • Do not attempt to touch or handle wildlife
  • Keep pets and children away
  • Do not attempt to capture or transport the animal
  • Avoid close contact, even if the animal appears calm

If the animal is injured, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

What You Should Do Right Now

  • Observe from a safe distance
  • Do not feed or give water
  • Do not interfere unless the animal is clearly in distress
  • Call a rehabilitator if the animal is injured or not moving normally

Important: Many Animals Should Be Left Alone

In many cases, wildlife does not need human intervention.

This is especially true for baby animals.

  • Mothers are often nearby and will return
  • Young wildlife may be temporarily left alone while the mother searches for food
  • Removing a healthy baby animal can separate it from its parent and reduce its chances of survival

Only intervene if:

  • The animal is clearly injured
  • The parent is confirmed dead
  • The animal has been alone for an extended time with no activity

When in doubt, call a rehabilitator before taking action.

Can You Take It To a Vet?

Usually no.

Most veterinarians:

  • Do not treat wildlife
  • Will refer you to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator
